Exhibition: Old Rubber Shoes

Dates: May 6-18, 2013

Location: 1^st floor of Templestay Infocenter (across from Jogyesa temple)

Exhibition details:

                  Buddha once told his disciples, “When practitioners live together with others, they should lead

 their lives as if they were alone; when they are alone, they should live as if they were together with others.”

                  The communal lifestyle of Buddhist practitioners allows them to fully attain the profound meaning

 contained within Buddha’s teaching. Such practitioners, who devote themselves to the way of enlightenment,

 are called “Sunims.” Many people in Korea understand that Sunims are those who wear monastic grey robes

and traditional rubber shoes.

                  The shoes themselves imply “walking together.” In particular, the traditional white shoes worn by

 Buddhist practitioners contain the meaning “walking together towards enlightenment.” Buddha spent his

 whole life walking for his own personal cultivation and to spread the Dharma teachings.

                  The old shoes featured in this exhibition were worn by esteemed practitioners at Unmun Temple in

 Cheongdo. For more than three hundred years, Sunims have worn shoes like this as part of their practice –

while walking about the temple, treading the paths of their minds, and trudging through rice fields.

                  We sincerely pray that this fruitful practice will continue and that you will also be able to attain

the deeper meaning of personal cultivation in this way.

Author Biography: Venerable Hee-Sang

Born in Jeonju, South Korea

Graduated from Unmun Temple Monastic Academy

Graduated from Dongguk University with Bachelors in Fine Arts

Received diploma and Master’s degree from Professor Thiele at University of the Arts in Bremen, Germany

Has held around 10 personal exhibitions, as well as several group exhibitions.

Has participated in group projects with artists in Berlin, Germany and Gaillac, France.

Works have been exhibited in a city hall in Germany, in the Jeonbuk Museum of Art, and in the Central

Buddhist Museum.
