In Buddhism, lantern embodies meaning “to light the light of wisdom”
and people recall what it means by making lanterns and lighting them.
Of all the diverse forms of lanterns, the most commonly used is the lotus lantern.
Because the way a lotus puts forth beautiful, pure flowers, untainted by the mud in
which it grows is symbolic of Buddhist ideal to reach enlightenment by rising above
ignorance and darkness through cultivation of mind.
In addition to lantern, Buddhist ideal is also expressed through
Buddhist lotus paintings and lotus flowers in ponds around temples.
