Guinsa Temple, located in So-baek Mountains, is the headquarters of Korean Buddhist Cheontae Order, of Mahayana Buddhism.
Guinsa serves as a main temple for over two million Cheontae believers who are inspired by the teachings of the Great Venerable Sang-woel Woen-gak Dae-jo-sa, the revivalist of Korean Cheontae Order.
The awe-inspiring beauty of Guinsa sits in the Yeon-hwa-ji valley surrounded by the magnificent So-baek Mountains including the Gug-mang-bong peak.
“Yeon-hwa-ji” means ‘Lotus Flower area’. The area where Guinsa sits on looks like a lotus flower due to the mountains adjoining, and that is how Yeon-hwa-ji got its name.
The Great Venerable Sang-woel Woen-gak Dae-jo-sa, who has revived Cheontae Order in Korea after its absence for 500 years, established Guinsa in Yeon-hwa-ji.
It is famously told that one day he had seen Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva standing on the ground of Yeon-hwa-ji in his vision, and he found his way to the site.
The Great Venerable Sang-woel Woen-gak Dae-jo-sa’s aspirations were to revive the spirit of true Buddhism, save all beings, and protect the nation as it was right around the Korean War.
His determination to save all beings and commitment for altruism were truly inspiring and incomparable.
The meaning of the name Guinsa reflects such aspirations; ‘salvation and kindness’.
The current majestic beauty, Guinsa, had an extraordinary humble beginning as a small, thatched hut with intertwined arrowroot vines that was built in 1945 by the Great Venerable Dae-jo-sa himself.
This is where he attained the exquisite Dharma after his austere practice with an undefeatable force.
His unparalleled wisdom and integrity have attracted many disciples and followers.
Guinsa has gained its reputation over the years as the most merciful and miraculous place where everyone’s wishes would come true when they pray earnestly at the temple.
Per Guinsa’s core value that is in the teachings of Mahayana Buddhism, Guinsa teaches, inspires, and encourages everyone to practice Buddhism in daily life to attain Buddhahood.
