Free-Style Program

Getting away from the repetitive daily life, grab a chance to comfortably relax your body and mind in the tranquil setting of the 1500-year-old temple.

Find a serene place.

Take a deep breath through your nose and slowly breathe out counting 1... 2... 3... 4... 5....

Have a moment of introspection while enjoying the beautiful nature.

Fill your mind with emptiness.

Awake the Buddha-nature in you.

* Runs Sunday through Friday.

* This rest-based program is designed to give the participants as much free time as possible.
As a result, our staff will only accompany you during the temple tour, the 3 meal times and 2 Yebul(the Buddhist Ceremony); rest will be your free time.

Learn about basic concepts in Korean Buddhism and the temple etiquettes. We will also briefly go over the program schedule.

Temple Tour

Founded in 553 A.D, Beopjusa Temple has lit up its Dharma Lantern for 1500 years. With its long history and the possession of numerous cultural assets including 3 national treasures and 12 addition national treasures, it is often referred to as the living outdoor museum. While doing a temple tour, you can not only learn about Beopjusa Temple but also have a good understanding of Korean history, culture and Buddhism.

Yebul (Buddhist Ceremony)

Twice a day at Korean temples, during the early morning and evening, people pay their respects and make offerings to Buddha through a special ceremony called Yebul. The ceremony begins with the playing of the four Buddhist instruments: the Dharma drum, temple bell, wooden fish, and cloud-shaped gong.

What to prepare - Winter Season

* A uniform ( a vest and pants ) is provided during the stay. * What to bring : toiletries(including towels), a personal water bottle, loose clothes for sleep, extra clothes for winter season, sneakers for hiking, and socks. Self-defence from the cold is required, thick jacket would be good.

  • ※ Please keep the Temple’s rules and regulations for the program.

    1. A temple is a place for spiritual practice. Please refrain from loud talking, singing, smoking, drinking or excessive displays of affection.

    2. Please be on time and observe the templestay's schedule.

    3. Hapjang or holding palms together is a common way of exchanging greetings in a temple, especially to the monks and nuns. Also, whenever passing through the Buddha's Hall, please bow by placing palms together.

    4. This Templestay is the time for listening and communicating within yourself, truly recuperating.

    5. Instant keeping your valuables in a safe placing is available, whenever you want us to.

    6. Entering the temple, you are not allowed to carry your wheel suitcases. Please bring shoulderbag which is light to carry.

    7. Remember sleevelessness or flip-flops are prohibitted.

Way to Temple

Public Transfortation

Take a bus of which the final destination is Songnisan (속리산) Terminal.

Even though they call the bus a direct route, there might be short stops at Cheongju(청주) or Boen (보은) for a rest room or having more passengers on way to Songnisan. Please don't get off until you reach the last destination of Songnisan (Sokrisan 속리산).

If you're not sure, ask the bus driver showing Songnisan(Sokrisan 속리산) -> this word.

Please Note: If you take the Cheongju (청주) route, your bus will make a brief pit-stop at the Boeun (보은) Bus Terminal. The bus driver and passengers may all get off here. Do not get off! Otherwise you will have to purchase another ticket for the next bus coming through Boeun to Songnisan!

From Busan

Busan → Cheongju = 06:30 / 08:00 / 09:30 / 11:30 / 13:00 / 14:30 / 16:30 / 18:00 / 19:30

For those departing from Seoul, please go to the nearest terminal out of
Dong Seoul Bus Terminal (Gangbyeon station, Seoul Metro Line #2),

or Nambu Bus Terminal (Line #3) by subway.

Take a bus of which the final destination is Songnisan (속리산) Terminal.
