Templestay Introduction

■ About Bongsunsa

National Preceptor Beopin founded a temple called Unaksa in 969, the 20th year of the reign of Goryeo King Gwangjong.
In 1469, the 1st year of the reign of Joseon King Yejong, Queen Jeonghui (Queen Consort to King Sejo) moved the royal tomb for the late King Sejo to Mt. Unaksan, formed Gwangneung Royal Tomb, and renamed the temple Bongsunsa to pray for the peaceful resting of the king’s soul.

Bongsunsa suffered damages from the Japanese invasion, the Qing invasion of Joseon, and, most recently, the Korean War. After major repairs dedicatedly undertaken by Great Master Nanghye and Seon Master Gyemin in 1539 and 1637, respectively, the temple was repaired again in 1749 and 1848 to regain its refined and magnificent scale. The current temple structures are the result of the restoration work which has been conducted since 1960.
