Bonginsa

Tel : 031-528-5585
Located on the west side of Mount Cheonma, Gyeonggi Province, Bongin Temple was closely related with King Gwanghaegun of the Joseon Dynasty. In fact, his tomb and those of his mother and brother are lying just below the temple. In his lifetime, the king sent an official to the temple in order to have him build Budo Hermitage and, in 1620, erect a pagoda enshrining sarira brought from China. Bongin Temple perches on a ridge 700ft high at the foot of Mount Cheonma. The temple was deserted in the late Joseon period, and its sarira pagoda was removed to Japan. After suffering a long period of neglect it was finally reconstructed into its present state in 1979 by Dharma teacher Han Gilro, inheriting the Dharma lineage of Jogye Order.
