A temple as beautiful as the silvery sea… The meaning of Eunhaesa’s name (Silvery Sea Temple) is so beautiful, let’s take a look at it again. When the area around the temple is shrouded in fog, and the clouds begin to appear, the scene looks almost like the Pure Land, a rippling silver sea. But that sight cannot easily be seen by just anyone, so most people want to go back to the temple one more time. Eunhaesa was founded more than 1200 years ago. The temple was founded during the reign of Shilla King Heondeok (809 C.E.) by National Teacher Ven. Hyecheol (785-861 C.E.), just below the spot where the hermitage Unbuam is located now, and was originally called Haeansa (Sea Eye Temple). The temple burned to the ground in 1545, during the reign of Joseon King Injong, and so the next year it was moved to its current location and renamed Eunhaesa. This place is said to be the Pure Land, where the silvery sea dances. Eunhaesa is located in the southern foothills of the mountain Palgongsan. If you pay a visit to the temple, you’ll also be able to easily see the hermitages Unbuam and Baekheungam, among others, as they are located in each of the mountain’s valleys. These hermitages are like beautiful islands floating on the silvery sea. Also in Eunhaesa you can encounter some works by Korea’s preeminent calligrapher, the legendary Chusa, Jeonghee Kim (1786-1856). The signboards on the Daeoongjeon (Main Buddha Hall) and some other temple buildings were drawn by this famous calligrapher. Eunhaesa’s Templestay Program Eunhaesa has a wide variety of Templestay programs. There is a daylong program that focuses on young adults, more than seven kinds of two day programs that feature overnight stays at the temple, and a three day program. The two day programs include features such as walking meditation in the forest, a pilgrimage to local hermitages, a trek by starlight, horseback riding, a visit to an herb market, and a variety of other programs connected with the local area. There are also separate programs for kids, young adults, and families, as well as a special program designed for those who are currently
