Hwaeomsa temple is literally a “treasure house” because of the many cultural relics that the Korean government has designated “national treasures.”
It is also a holy place to seek enlightenment. It is located at the foot of Mt. Jirisan, considered sacred to the Korean people.
Throughout its 1,700-year history, the temple has preserved not only Buddha's teaching intact but also Korea’s history, culture, and traditions. The mountain fog tends to give the temple a mystical aura. The temple was built in the 5th century by Patriarch Yeongi, an Indian monk, who had brought with him from India the Avatamsaka Sutra (Flower Ornament Sutra). Therefore, it is considered a Hwaeom temple, or temple of the Hwaeom School. As the Sutra describes the realm of the Buddha's enlightenment, Hwaeomsa can be considered a realm of enlightenment. During the reign of United Silla’s King Gyeongdeok, Master Uisang stayed at the temple and developed it into a center of Hwaeom philosophy, eventually including 8 temples and 81 hermitages. Some of the outstanding designated national treasures date from that period. During the Japanese invasion (1592-1598), all of the temples were burnt down and only some stone lanterns and pagodas escaped damage. They were eventually rebuilt and still retain many national treasures. Won't you please come in and experience aspects of Korean Buddhism and culture?
