Hwaunsa is a living, educational temple, conveniently located in Yongin, just a short, direct bus ride from Gangnam Station, Seoul Station, or next to the Templestay Information Center (directly across from Jogyesa, near Insadong). Hwaunsa has maintained its status as Korea’s foremost educational training center for Bhikkhunis (Buddhist monastic nuns) since 1962. In Chinese characters, “Hwa” means shining and “un” means cloud. So, Hwaunsa is known as the """"Shining Temple in the Clouds.""""Those who come to Hwaunsa may shine and find their own inner peace and happiness. Hwaunsa's Treasures: Amitabha & Healing Buddha The wooden statues of seated Buddhas (Amitabba and Healing Buddha) that are enshrined in Hwaunsa’s Daeungjeong (Main Buddha Hall) were transferred from Geumsansa Temple in Gimje in 1960 by Venerable Bhikkhuni Ji Myeong. These two Buddhas used to be part of five Buddhas enshrined in Geumsansa Temple, which was established in 1635. One Buddha is ‘Amitabha,' from the West and the other is ‘Healing Buddha,’from the East. Black ink writing was found on the bottom of the statues. Construction records, as well as a list of donators, were also found within these two Buddha statues. The Buddha statues were created in 1628 (the 6th year of the reign of King In Jo and so their style is typical of the late Joseon Dynasty. As leading remains from the early 17th century, both statues are recognized as great contributions to the study of Buddhist culture and sculpture. They have been designated as Gyeonggi-do Tangible Cultural Assets (#200).
