The name youngpyungsa literally means eternal peace. Just like its name, this place somehow quiets a troubled mind and gives one the sensation of comfortable rest. youngpyungsa at Janggunsan Mountain is famous for hosting the magnificent spectacle of Korea’s symbolic autumn flower, the wild Siberian chrysanthemum. These flowers are everywhere, on the steep mountain slope behind the Main Buddha Hall and the residential halls, also in the field behind the soy sauce jars, all the way up to the temple’s entrance. The flower gardens extend over 2,000 pyeong (about 1.6 acres). Many people love the Siberian chrysanthemum festival held in the late autumn. The beauty of Yeongpyeongsa calls countless people before the Buddha. It is located in Janggi-myeon, in the historic city of Gongju, on the eastern outskirts of the Sunrise Village on Janggunsan Mountain. This temple is in the same area with other famous old temples, such as Magoksa, Gapsa, and Donghaksa, so many lay believers go on pilgrimages to visit these temples in a row. Yeongpyeongsa has 6 buildings of cultural treasure quality and 3 small hermitages. Janggunsan Mountain, where the temple is located, is small but full of vital energy. According to geomancy (Chi: Feng Shui), the mountain is an ideal location because it is shaped in the form of a dragon going up against the Geumgang River. Though its energy is strong, Yeongpyeongsa is a tranquil and cozy place for pure practice, with fresh air and clean water. Here, you will find fireflies, crawfish, and black snails, which can only survive in a pure environment. And all kinds of wildflowers will vie with one another to greet you; the columbines and the pasqueflowers in spring, the white lotuses in summer, and the Siberian chrysanthemums in autumn. Yeongpyeongsa is a temple in ‘eternal peace’ that preserves its ancient tradition, but at the same time, a young temple that is building new halls and pagodas to enshrine Buddha statues and to fill up the Bodhi-Mind. The temple cherishes the beauty of the Siberian chrysanthemums indigenous to Korea, and shares it with all neighbors. It has also developed many programs for the youth and adults to experience the genuine Korean culture. Yeongpyeongsa is an open ground that nurtures the precious traditional culture o
